Marian Watkins Massey Scholarship

Marian Watkins Massey was born in Brigham City, Utah in 1925. Her father, Eddis Watkins, was a teacher and coach for 35 years.  Her son, Richard, was a teacher and football coach for 35 years. After raising her five children, Marian went back to college at Arizona State University. 

Marian was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education at the age of 49 and received her Master’s Degree in Education at the age of 53.  She was an educator with the Gilbert School District until her passing in 1996.  Marian was preceded by the passing of her husband, Glenn Massey, in 1992.  Her daughter, Anne Ecton, and son, Richard Massey, reside in Gilbert, AZ.  A son, John Massey, resides in Farmington, Utah.  A son, Dale Massey, resides, in Annendale, Virginia and another son, David Massey, passed away in 2022. 

This scholarship is to honor an incredible mother and outstanding educator. 

The Marian Watkins Massey Scholarship is for Perry High School students who want to obtain a college education. 

Two (2) awards of $3,000 per academic year ($1,500/semester) for two (2) consecutive years providing that the student continues to be qualified. 

Scholarship Eligibility:

  • Must be a citizen of the United States of America
  • Must be a resident of the United States of America
  • Must have a high school cumulative GPA between 2.5 to 3.25
  • Must have a demonstrated financial need
  • Must attend an accredited Arizona Community College, enroll as a full-time student, and complete 15 hours or more each semester in classes toward a degree program
  • Must maintain a college semester and cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher

To Apply: 

  • Applicants must use the current Marian Watkins Massey Scholarship application.

  • At least three (3) letters of recommendation must be secured from non-relatives: two (2) must be from someone at the high school (principals, teachers, counselors, or coaches), and one (1) from an adult not in any way connected with the high school. The recommendation form must be signed by each recommender and attached as part of the application. It is the student’s responsibility to follow up on recommendations to assure they are received by the deadline. An application is considered incomplete without three (3) recommendations.

  •  Answer 4 questions, in essay form:

    • In 1-2 paragraphs, tell me about yourself and your family.

    • In 1-2 paragraphs, where do you want to attend college and why?

    • In 1 paragraph, what do you want to study in college and why?

    • In 1-2 paragraphs, what do you want to be doing in 5 years?
